Mise-en-scene

The scene is in a dark, not very well lit room. There is a bit of light coming from the window, showing it is very bright, but the curtains block out any of the light.
There are two photos of just him in military uniform. This shows that he is alone, and solitary, but also that he is a strong, overpowering figure.
There is a chair, but with no one on it, making the place more awkward, and void of life.
The small ray of life is on the woman showing she’s a ‘bright’ person, and that he is quite dark. The walls are a brown-green colour, making the room look dark, and lifeless.
The man is constantly clattering with his cutlery, and as there are no other sounds in the room, it makes it very awkward for the woman, and she can’t stand to see him, so turns away (there is a close up on her at this point). This makes her notice one of the photos of him in his military uniform, they use an eyeline shot to do this.
There is a model of a man, riding a horse which is rearing up. This again, shows he is an overpowering figure, and we know he will be able to manipulate her into doing what he wants.
Even though it is breakfast, he is wearing very smart suit, making him seem odd, but he does fit in with all the other expensive furniture and cutlery. She, on the over hand, is not well dressed up she is a plain dress, but if it wasn’t for the ray of light, would sink into the background colour.

Sorry, couldn’t log onto wordpress at home, so had to e-mail it to myself and do it at school.

Hawking scene HW…

21 10 2009

Camera angles

The scene starts off with a close up to his face; this would be to show his vulnerability and weakness. The shot is done quite messy and we can see the bars/railings for his bed. This shows disorder, and confusion

It the goes to have a shot where we can see more of the room, a high angled shot, and it’s slightly cantered, this makes the patients seem weak and vulnerable, like they did with Hawking. It makes it seem like the patients are being watched, and that they are exposed, this gives the impression that they don’t have a time to themselves while in the hospital.

They moved on to a eye line match of hawking, to show that he is looking at the bed being made.

It then goes to a scene of him and the doctor walking down the corridor. There is an over the shoulder shot at Hawking, so you can see his reactions with what the doctor is telling him. This makes the doctor seem detached to what is being said, makes him quite cold.

Light

The light from the windows show the hope Hawking has to what is said by the doctor, like it is a faint glimmer of hope in what else is dark. The light is the understanding, and hope Hawking has, and the dark is confusion. This makes the scene seem uncomfortable and eerie. His glasses reflect the world around him, showing he cannot see clearly.

Tzvetan Todorov

8 10 2009

finaly managed to get my vladimir propp hw up without my internet crashing.

Vladimir identified the 8 roles for every character in a film or book:

The villain — struggles against the hero.

The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.

The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest.

The princess and her father — gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father could not be clearly distinguished.

The dispatcher — characters who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.

The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.

[False hero] — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.

These characters can be used in any time of narrative

Tzvetan Todorov

Tzvetan Todorov said that at the start of a story there is equilibrium, where opposing forces are balanced.

Then something interrupts this, breaking the equilibrium setting up a chain of events.

The problems are solved at the end so that the equilibrium is restored
